Brant Beach Bulletin – July 11th, 2025

Brant Beach Bulletin
July 11th, 2025

Thank you for renewing your membership for 2025.

This issue covers concerns about bike and e-bike safety, the longstanding issue of homes that use too much of their street frontage as driveway access, and other news.

Bikes chained to the handrail at beach ramps may have their locks cut in order to keep the ramp and the handrail clear. Also, fat-tire bikes or any type of bike are not permitted on the beach.

E-bikes continue to be a major concern, due to speeding, unsafe riding, traffic law violations, and resulting injuries. E-bikes must come to a full stop at a stop sign, stop for red lights, yield to other vehicles and pedestrians when appropriate, and respect one-way signs. The police continue to apprehend and issue tickets to violators, but the mayor has asked everyone to speak to their family members and guests who ride e-bikes about safe and lawful riding. The Township is working on a new e-bike ordinance.

Homes which use their full street frontage for driveway access are again in the crosshairs. The mayor explained that our beach replenishment funding depends upon having sufficient street parking for the public to access the beach. Owners without curbs are encouraged to call the Zoning Department at 609-361-1000 and indicate what frontage is driveway access and what is street parking, so that the Township can paint yellow lines to mark and protect your access area. Otherwise, if a car parked on the street blocks your driveway, you are probably on the wrong side of the law. This applies to both the oceanside and the bayside, and to both standard and oversize lots. See the ordinance description below regarding required frontage calculations.

Know your location when calling 911 When someone on Long Beach Island calls 911, the call is routed to Toms River, and the dispatcher needs to know the caller’s location in order to call the responsible township. For non-emergency calls in Long Beach Township, use 609-494-3322. A properly executed 911 call requires three things: the location, the concise nature of the emergency, and someone standing by to flag down the first responders.

COMMISSIONERS’ MEETING

Representatives from the Brant Beach Taxpayers Association including Pete Potochney, Janis Metz, and Donn O’Brien attended the July 7 Long Beach Township Commissioners’ Meeting.

Ordinances

Proposed on First Reading. First reading ordinances are available by visiting, emailing or telephoning the Township. They are no longer available on the LBT website.

25-11C: Establishes 28 feet as the width of the curb cut allowed on a property, or two curb cuts 14 feet wide with at least 18 feet of curb between. A curb cut is essentially the beginning of property’s driveway, paved or not, on the border of the street and the property. This ordinance does not apply to private easements in which multiple homeowners have deeded ownership.

 Passed on Second Reading

25-10C: Prohibits the installation of lighting over dune walkways.

Thank you for your continued support of the Brant Beach Taxpayers Association.
