Brant Beach Bulletin
August 10, 2024
This issue of the Brant Beach Bulletin covers beach replenishment, upcoming fun events such as the visiting Clydesdale horses and the Cardboard Boat Regatta, E-bike problems, and more.
On August 5, representatives from the Brant Beach Taxpayers Association including President Pete Potochney, Mike Fahner, Georgia Glasser, and Janis Metz attended the monthly Long Beach Township Commissioner’s Meeting.
❖ Beach Replenishment for LBI: The project has been approved and all funds, including the $5M shortfall, have been secured. The scheduled start date and replenishment areas have not been determined.
❖ The Budweiser Clydesdales are coming to Brant Beach. You’ll have a chance to see these magnificent horses on Friday, August 16, as they parade through Brant Beach, starting at 11am on Ocean Boulevard from 68th Street to 74th Street, and then back to 68th Street, where the Clydesdales will do a meet and greet at Bayview Park from 12-1 pm.
❖ Cardboard Boat Regatta: For the second year, boats made from only cardboard and duct tape will launch from the bay beach in Bayview Park on Saturday, September 7, beginning at 10am. Propelled by arms, oars or paddles, crewmembers will race their crafts around a buoy. Prizes are awarded, including Best Creative Boat and Best Sink. The regatta rules and registration form, which needs to be submitted by September 5, are at https://www.longbeachtownship.com/2nd-annual-cardboard-boat-regatta/
❖ Speeding E-Bikes: Mayor Mancini previously announced that the Township will confiscate e-bikes when the rider was observed behaving irresponsibly. Accordingly, Township police recently confiscated an e-bike ridden by a 19-year-old going 62 mph. Mayor Mancini asked property owners to contact our state assembly representatives, state senators and Governor Murphy to advocate for new state-wide legislation that would set rules and standards for e-bikes and riders. ❖ Flashers On for Pedestrians: More and more drivers are getting in the habit of turning on their flashers as they slow down to stop for pedestrians crossing the street, particularly Long Beach Boulevard, to alert following cars not to simply change lanes and pass.
❖ Shuttle Buses: Everyone is encouraged to use the LBI Shuttles. The cost is $5 per one-way ride, and children 12 and under ride free with an adult. For more information, go to https://www.lbishuttle.com/.
Ordinances
❖ Proposed On First Reading: First reading ordinances are available by visiting, emailing or telephoning the Township. They are no longer available on the LBT website.
- 24-23C This ordinance proposes fines for more than one false alarm per calendar year on the same property and prohibits alarms with external lights and sirens. This ordinance seeks to reduce the number of false alarms because they divert fire personnel and resources from true emergencies.
- 24-24C This ordinance defines “front yard” and outlines what accessory structures, including swimming pools, are permissible. It defines “mixed use” properties and the balance of commercial vs residential use that is required, and places restrictions on accessory structures and outdoor kitchens.
- 24-25C This ordinance requires zoning permits for landscaping installation. It limits landscaping in the front 10 feet of a property or along an easement to grass, stone, or crushed shells, and specifies that commercial landscapers must comply. The mayor said that the goal is to address overgrown trees or shrubs that become a public safety hazard.
- 24-26C This ordinance addresses two nuisance noise situations. First, it requires temporary electric service poles at construction sites where regular service is unavailable and prohibits running more than two gas-powered generators at one site, with the goal of reducing the use of generators. Second, it establishes a 100-foot criterion for use by police officers responding to a noise complaint to determine if neighborly noise is too loud and thus constitutes a violation.
❖ Passed On Second Reading:
- 24-18 & 24-19 Bond ordinances for $2M and $999,999, respectively, to replace water mains.
- 24-20 Bond ordinance for $1.425M for a new beach patrol building at 7910 Long Beach Blvd. The current structure is unsound and needs to be replaced.
- 24-21 Bond ordinance for $1,279.380 to repair roadways including Bayview Ave and West 79th Street (Winifred).
- 24-22 Bond ordinance for $3.8M to pay for storm water pump stations. Six more pumps will be installed between 20th & 89th Streets, in the area south of the Acme and north of Spray Beach. The County will reimburse the Township for the $3.8M.
